The Healing Power of Art

What’s Holding You Back?

If you’re anything like me, these quiet little thoughts sneak in when you least expect them:

“I’m not creative enough.”
“I don’t have time.”
“Everyone else is already doing this.”
“I’m too ___.”

They slip into your mind and slowly push your dream to the side. Not because the dream isn’t real — but because doubt is loud.

I’ve learned that one of the most powerful things you can do is replace those thoughts with truth. So let’s slow down for a moment and bust a few of these myths together.

Myth #1: “I’m not creative enough.”
Truth: Creativity isn’t something you’re born with or without. It’s something you practice. It grows the more you use it. I’ve seen creativity show up in the most unexpected ways — through small experiments, simple ideas, and moments of play. You don’t have to be “artsy enough.” You just have to begin.

Myth #2: “I’m not an artist.”
Truth: Art doesn’t have one look. It doesn’t have to be perfect, framed, or traditional. Art can start with scraps, found objects, nature, texture, or even curiosity. If you create with intention, meaning, or heart — you are an artist.

Myth #3: “I don’t have time.”
Truth: You don’t need hours. You need minutes. Five or fifteen minutes a day adds up over time. Small moments of creating can be grounding, healing, and deeply fulfilling — sometimes more so than scrolling or zoning out at the end of the day.

Myth #4: “The market is saturated.”
Truth: No one else sees the world the way you do. Your experiences, your hands, your story — that combination doesn’t exist anywhere else. People don’t just buy art; they connect to the person behind it. There is room for your voice.

Myth #5: “I’m too old to start something new.”
Truth: There is no expiration date on creativity. In fact, life experience often deepens it. Every season of life brings something valuable to your work. Starting now is still starting — and that matters.

Myth #6: “I’m not tech-savvy enough.”
Truth: You don’t have to know everything. You only have to learn the next small step. Skills can be learned slowly, imperfectly, and at your own pace. Confidence comes from doing — not from already knowing.

Myth #7: “Nobody will buy my work.”
Truth: The right people will. Art isn’t for everyone — and that’s okay. When you create honestly and share it bravely, your work will find the people who are meant to connect with it.

Myth #8: “What if I fail?”
Truth: Failure isn’t the opposite of success — it’s part of it. Every misstep teaches you something. The only real failure is never giving yourself the chance to try.

Myth #9: “AI will replace artists.”
Truth: Tools can assist, but they can’t replace you. They don’t carry your story, your hands, your memories, or your intention. People are drawn to art with soul — and that’s something only a human can create.

Take 5 minutes today

Ask yourself: Which myth has been holding me back?
Write it down. Then write the truth beside it.
After that, spend just five minutes doing something small — sketching, creating, planning, or even imagining. One small step is still a step forward.
Your art matters.
Your voice matters.
And you are allowed to take up space.
